Nothing Called My Own

I know I’m in danger
But need not of fearing
If I remember
That I am nothing

I’ll know that danger
Can take nothing from me
When I feel afraid
I forget, nothing I be

And If I remember
I’ve nothing called my own
That will not be lost
At the end of life shown

That only what’s not mine
But God’s will ever live
And free me from false fears
With a heart to give

(based upon words by Thomas Merton)

Worthy of Love

Our job’s to love others
Without stopping to see
Whether or not
They are worthy

That’s not our business
In fact, nobodies
What were asked to do is
To love everybody

And this love itself
Through God we will see

Will render both us
And our neighbors worthy

Let us thank our God
Who loves abundantly
Through his grace may we
Love generously

Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy. ~Thomas Merton

Turned into A Prayer

Let me seek then
A new way pursued
The gift of silence
And solitude

Where everything touched
Is turned into a prayer
In drawing to soul
Your Presence is here

Where the sky is my prayer
The wind in the tree
The birds and light
Your prayer within me

Our being of dwelling
Through gift of creation
For my soul is a prayer
Of Your incarnation

“Let me seek then, the gift of silence and solitude, where everything I touch is turned into a prayer: where the sky is my prayer, the birds are my prayer, the wind in the trees is my prayer…” ~ Thomas Merton

Gratitude

To be grateful is to recognize
God’s love in everything
For indeed He has
Given us everything

Every breath is love
Every moment, grace
For it brings in Him
Immense grace to embrace

Take nothing for granted
Unresponsive, never
To wonder of awakening
To praise our God forever

For the grateful person
Knows God is good, above
Not only by hearsay
But experience of love

Thomas Merton ~ To be grateful is to recognize the Love of God in everything He has given us – and He has given us everything. Every breath we draw is a gift of His love, every moment of existence is a grace, for it brings with it immense graces from Him. Gratitude therefore takes nothing for granted, is never unresponsive, is constantly awakening to new wonder and to praise of the goodness of God. For the grateful person knows that God is good, not by hearsay but by experience. And that is what makes all the difference.

Mertons: God is Manifest

Life is this simple
Of world living true
Absolutely transparent
That God’s shining through

Abandon ourselves
To our God fully
We see it sometimes
And maybe frequently

That God is manifest
In everything
In everyone
Through nature shining

Becoming obvious
That God is everywhere
Simply impossible
To not be with Him here

What You Think of Me

(from quote by Thomas Merton)

Your idea of me
Is fabricated
With materials borrowed
From others related

What you think of me
Depends totally
Upon what you think
Of yourself, you see?

Perhaps that you create
You’re idea of me
Out of the things
You’d like to cut from thee

Maybe a reflection
What others do construe
Or that it is simply
What you think I think of you
